Lo: To apply the theoretical framework to media texts
What is theoretical framework?
Four major concepts, or ideas, which form the basis of the concept:
- Media language
- Media instructions
- Media audiences
- Media representations
Media language
This covers terms used, how texts are constructed and the messages conveyed, it includes:
- Camerawork (cinematography)
- Soundtrack
Non-diegetic sound is when the sounds have been over laid onto the film, such as music or sound effects that wouldn't be heard in the scene.
- Mise-en-scene
- Editing
Includes all the post production work on a movie. Not really meant to be noticed or if it is, its purposely done.
- transition
- pace and speed of cuts
- CGI
- green screening
- graphics
Camerawork
Starts with wide shot/extreme wide shot of train track in a city to show setting. Switches from what the kid sees to what the joker sees to how different points of view. Close up on his face when he sees the TV to show his anger and to give tension. Long show then he was o the stairs to show what he had become because it was the fist time where you saw him as the joker. Angle switching and panning around joker to represent the moving car passing him.
One way the camerawork was used effectively was when the joker saw the man on tv making fun of him. By having a close up of his face while the men on tv were laughing in the background was effective because it showed the anger on his face, and since this was the point where the joker was born, it gives an almost exited effect to the watcher to want to know what he'll do to get his revenge on people who dissed him. By having the close up it shows more of his facial expressions to show the anger in his face. Also it shows the bags under his eyes and how ill he is, showing he works hard and doesn't sleep well, this shows he wants to accomplish his dream but isn't able. By having the men on the TV laughing at him for something he's worked hard for.
Happy Death Day
Soundtrack
The use of sound in this film is effective because after the areas where she's killed, the sounds stops and she wakes up, making the watcher think it was a dream. The dramatic effect of the building motif of the base. By having the music repeating itself but only getting louder makes the watcher suspect that something will happen. By having the sound then go off before a jump scare makes the watcher tence, by having nothing to listen to at that point makes the watcher want to be able to have something to look at. However, by having the jump scare with a blast of music makes the watcher shoked by the sudden action and sound.
Institution
Lo: to understand concept of ownership and regulation.
Definition:
Who makes what and for whom. The owners, companies and people that produce, distribute and govern media.
BIG SIX: Paramount, Warner Bros, Sony, Walt Disney, Universal, 20th Century Fox
What types of media does Disney own?
ABC film studios, core publishing,
Why is it important to know who owns the media?
I think it is important because they can track your every move. They own every media device and what ever you post or say, they could tell people about it or sell your personal information to 3rd party buyers. Also, its important to know who owns what so we know whose point of view were looking at, such as news papers and the side of a story they take or how they word different stories.
Audience Thursday 26th September 2019
Lo: To identify how a media text targets a specific audience
Mass audience: a very broad range of people.
Niche audience: a much smaller very specific audience.
I know this would be for a teenage age range because it has fashion. Its stereotypical for girls to be into fashion however, nower days, boys are more interested in shoes and trainers than girls. By having this add with unisex shoes on and saying 'express you' is saying to a younger generation to be themselves.
Representation
Lo: To explore the idea of representation in the media
When companies on the internet and media make people seem 'perfect'. By taking photos and editing them, they change who the actual person is. They make women slimmer and make men seem more toned in their muscles. Companies like dove make "stereotypical" girls. They take women with tiny waists and perfect faces and use them for their products, making other girls want to look like them. This causes issues like Anorexia and eating disorders alike, due to girls wanting to have the same body shape as the models.

In this picture, I will be labelling the characters left and right. The man on the left looks like an investigator or someone who knows what to do. I know this because he is pointing towards the man on the right, like he's telling hims what to do. Not only that but he's also wearing casual but warm clothing, indicating he is familiar with what to wear for the weather. He also has a torch in his hand like hes searching for something, since its a blue light, i suspect he use to be involved in a special force of a sort, due to blue light being the strongest type of torch.
The man on the right looks like a normal business man due to his smart outfit, well styled hair and shaved face.
For my trailer analysation, i will be using The First Purge.

There is also a scene where it shows a normal family of 2 siblings, a girl and a boy. By showing their normal lives of them hugging and saying they'll see each other "tonight" shows that they're main characters, because you wouldn't see the normal lives of everyone in the film unless it changed someway. But also, by them promising to see each other tonight already tells the watcher their plans will me slightly ruined.
Fantastic analysis - well done!
ReplyDeleteWWW - you've identified elements of Media Language used explained why they were used
DIRT - Chose a different element of Media Language to analyse
Thank you. I will try my best to use a bigger range of of media elements. Thank you for the comment
DeleteGood DIRT work.
ReplyDeleteRepresentation - good notes, try including stereotypes too.
Trailer analysis:
WWW - you've identified some elements correctly
DIRT - try not to explain the narrative (storyline). Focus on the effects of specific elements (camerawork, MES, representation etc.)
